Literacy Events

Greetings! I Love to Read Month is February.

In Manitoba, where I live and work, the entire month of February is dedicated to I Love to Read. Each year on the first days of February or the last day of January (depending on the calendar) I plan an I Love to Read month kick-off to draw attention to this month-long event dedicated to literacy awareness. Activities for the 39th annual (2018) are underway. I was happy to do the kick-off on Feb. 2 , 2018 with my teacher candidates at the UM Faculty of Education. They made wonderful posters and shouted/danced in the I Love to Read kick-off conga line to celebrate the beginning of this special literacy month. We want everyone to be able to say, "I love to read!"

I've hosted many kick-off events over 39 years. A few of my favourite kick-off themes were:
Get Together to Read: World's Longest I Love to Read Conga Line
Reading Pirates: Matie, Let's Read!
Ghosts of Reading Past
Reading Rhumba
Reading Animals
Getting the Bug for Reading
Right 2 Read: Right 2 Write
I Love to Read and Write: Literacy is a Human Right
I Love to Read Poster and Poetry Contest

Invitation: If you have a special idea to contribute and want to come together with others to celebrate the next reading kick-off then please contact me at karen.smith@umanitoba.ca.

I am glad that you could read this!
